1er Régiment Étranger de Cavalerie
Oprichting
Op 5 Augustus
1920 wordt er een wetsontwerp aangenomen tot het oprichten van een regiment
cavalerie.
Het 1e
RE krijgt de opdracht tot het formeren van het
regiment.
Bij het 2e
REI in Saïda
(Algerije) worden de toekomstige eskadrons van het REC geformeerd. Het 1e RE en het 3e
RE sturen alle Franse en buitenlandse oud cavaleristen naar Saida. Het zijn
vooral oud beroeps militairen, Wit Russen uit de legers van WRANGEL en
DENIKINE, Hongaren (75% van de legionairs uit het 1e escadron
waren gedemobiliseerde Hongaren van het Armées de Charles 1e
d'Autriche) en Duitsers.
In 1921 gaan
deze eskadrons, één voor één, naar hun garnizoenen in Tunesië; Sousse,
Gafsa en Zarzis.
Op 20 Juni 1922 volgt het oprichtingsbesluit van het (1er ) Régiment Étranger de Cavalerie.
Op 28 Juni 1922 bericht
de New York Times:
“A Mounted Foreign Legion.
Special Cable to The New York Times.
PARIS, Jun 27.- France is to have a Foreign Legion
of horsemen.
The edict creating this sister organization of the famous Foreign Legion of
Infantry is published today in the Journal Officiel.
The new force will be called the “First Foreign Regiment of Cavalry,” and
will be composed of four active squadrons and a depot battalion. The
organization will be similar to that of the existing Foreign Legion.
The First Foreign Regiment also will follow the lines of the Foreign Legion
so far as recruiting, promotion and administration are concerned.
The uniforms of the officers and men of the new legion will be established
by Ministerial decision.
